Dr. Akshat Pandey and Dr. Vinod Ravindran, the editors, need to be complimented for this multi-author book titled “Glucocorticoids in Rheumatology.” This book contains 10 chapters authored by nineteen rheumatologists from across India. All chapters are very well-written and provide up-to-date text in the given topics. As the editors aptly state, “this handy volume with short, focused chapters is aimed to give busy clinicians relevant information in an easy to read, 'ready reckoner' format”. Readers would agree with Prof. Rohini Handa who in his foreword of this book has admired its comfortable font size and attractive layout, with many figures, tables, and key points interspersed with the text.

Glucocorticoids (GCs) are widely used for various inflammatory and autoimmune conditions by rheumatologists as well as other specialists. The history of GCs and their mechanisms of actions are very well elucidated in the initial chapters. Chapters on the use of GCs in various rheumatic diseases along with strategies to minimize the risks make an interesting read. They should be used for the lowest possible dose for the shortest period is the key message from the chapter on GC-related adverse effects. GC-induced osteoporosis, a matter of concern, is discussed in a separate chapter. The effect of GC on the growing skeleton and peculiar problems when used in children has been very well addressed in the chapter on GC in pediatric rheumatic diseases. The similarities of deflazacort, the latest GC in the Indian market, with conventional GCs has been very well illustrated in a chapter that cautions the readers about its poor cost-benefit ratio and discusses the situations where it may be used. The discussion on dissociative GCs, liposomal GCs, and nitro-steroids introduces the reader to newer GCs. Recommendations by various international bodies related to the use of GCs in rheumatic conditions have been nicely summarized along with short case scenarios in another next chapter. The Indian perspective of GC usage describes uses and misuses, the demand and supply mismatch, self-medication, and non-prescription use, and draws attention toward the possible GC content in alternative medications. This chapter also provides solutions to challenges for optimal use of GCs in India.

This volume is strongly recommended for all medical practitioners involved in the management of rheumatic diseases. It is also recommended for medical students as they can learn how a commonly used drug can be approached in detail from various perspectives. This book is the result of admirable efforts by the editors and showcases many young enthusiastic authors from all over the country. This book is a useful companion for the entire Indian medical fraternity who deal with a variety of rheumatic conditions in their routine clinical practice.
